Reviews of the Used Book
1) My grouse against modern poetry is its obscurity. Much as I read and re-read it, I don’t understand what the poet is trying to say. I feel he is mocking my intelligence. What right has he to make me feel foolish? I don’t have to read him.
This does not apply to Makarand Paranjape who teaches English in the Jawaharlal Nehru University. I had heard of his two earlier collections of poems, but not read them. I read his third collection, Used Book, and decided to get his earlier collections.
I suggest you buy the book to read … his poems. Paranjape is a very gifted poet.
-Khuswant Singh, Hindustan TImes
2) Makarand Paranjape is a man of many parts. It is his poetry in Used Book which blends his various insights into a composite vision of man’s struggle, his ambitions and his failures: Used Book can become a much used book.
-Rachna Joshi, Indian Literature
3) Makarand Paranjape returns to the scene of poetry with Used Book. With this volume he has moved beyond the defiant individualism of The Serene Flame and Playing the Dark God. The powers of observation are intact. So is the irony and cool detachment that characterizes much of Paranjape’s work. Definitely one of the accomplished volumes of the year.
